Maple Sugar Bush Field Trip

What a beautiful day for a walk to the sugar bush.  Students walked to the woods to see where maple trees were tapped to collect sap that would later be boiled down to make maple syrup.

We were led by two knowledgeable 7th graders who taught us about the process of selecting trees to tap, tapping them and then the collection process.

Skype with author James Burks.

Wednesday, January 25th.

We had the amazing opportunity to skype with graphic novelist James Burks.  James is the author of the Bird and Squirrel series published by scholastic books.

James was very down to earth and relate-able.  He talked about how he came to write the Bird and Squirrel series.  Many authors of graphic novels work with other artists to create their books, but James does all the work himself including the coloring of the pages.  He said it takes him about a year to finish a book from start to finish.

James answered lots of student questions and overall it was a wonderful experience.  We look forward to talking with him again in the future.
